Last Week Days Twenty-Six and Twenty-Seven (Hours 125 - 135)

My last week at The Rick and Bubba Show proved that this whole experience was worth every 3:30 a.m. alarm clock. I have had the privilege to work with some of the most humble, patient, loud, and humorous guys that I know. (And being "loud" is a good thing because it kept me awake during the show).
I have learned what it's like to work in a fast-paced environment with people who take a lot of criticism for what they say. Not only did I gain experience in editing, but I also got to work with cameras for the Heartland Network. That was my favorite part.
The Rick and Bubba fan base definitely helps make the show. Some fans called in to wish me luck with everything in my future. That's when I realized how much everyone at the show means to them.

It's definitely easy to feel comfortable around the guys, but (for future interns) remember that you came to work. There's a time for work and a time for play. You have to help prepare and make the show happen. Ask questions if you don't remember how to do something or if you want to learn more about something if you're not sure how it works.

My last interview went great. We discussed my future, Rick applauded me on my hard work, and I got to joke around with the guys for the last time. It was an interview that I'll never forget.

Thank you to the Rick and Bubba crew for all you've done for me! I couldn't ask for a better first internship experience!

Days Twenty-four and Twenty-five ( Hours 115 - 125 )

April 13, 2015

I arrived at the studio at 4:45 a.m. I set up the phone screening room, recorded the early show segment, and helped Speedy start the early show. This day, we had a special guest. Ryan Hunter Reay stopped by the studio before heading to Tuscaloosa to speak with Nick Saban. He talked about winning his recent race and what he thought about Nick Saban. The guys also covered Lou Holtz leaving ESPN, and Hillary Clinton launching her Presidential Campaign for 2016 Presidential bid.

April 15, 2015

This day, I arrived at the studio at 4:45 a.m. I set up the phone screening room, stocked the fridge, recorded, and helped Speedy start the early show. April fifteenth was tax day so many callers were calling in about how much money they paid to the government after filing their taxes. We had a contest to see who paid the most taxes and whoever had the most, won $100. There were many opposing views to Rick's "flat tax will fix this situation" proposition. So, the callers kept us busy. I also messed up on the graphics for the Heartland Network which was embarrassing. We covered topics like : tax day, Aaron Hernandez verdict, and if Alabama had a Mt. Rushmore.

Days Twenty-two and Twenty-three ( Hours 105 - 115 )

Monday April 6, 2015

This day I arrived at the studio at 4:45 am for the early show. I helped Speedy start off the show by assisting him with getting the top news stories together. I also helped Adler work the graphics on the screen. I recorded the show on the recorder. Some of the stories we covered were: Wisconsin vs. Duke Championship game, "Woodlawn" trailer, Rolling Stone Rape story.

Wednesday April 8, 2015

I arrived at the studio at 4:45 am and helped Speedy with the early show. I recorded and worked the graphics on the screen for the Heartland Network. We had a special guest this day. The comedian, Frank Caliendo, called in and stole the show. Helmsey spoke to the interns and wants us to start taking more pictures/videos in the studio so he can post them to all of Rick and Bubba's social media accounts. We also covered stories like: Officer charged with murder in South Carolina, Tiger Woods and his preparation for the Masters, and a Bobcat catching a shark.

Days Twenty and Twenty-one (Hours 95 - 105)

Monday March 23, 2015
I arrived at the early show at 4:45 am. I worked the cameras, phones, and recordings. We also had a bigger audience this day so I was running back and forth trying to make them comfortable.

Wednesday March 25, 2015
I arrived for the early at 4:45 am. Adler wasn't there this day because he was having nose surgery so we did a segment on him. Another intern and I got to be on air for a minute talking about how none of us knew Adler was going to have surgery today.
Towards the end of the regular show, I messed up the recording. That was frustrating.
We also had Ron Collier, a comedian in the Birmingham area, as a guest speaker. It was great to hear his story and laugh.

Days Eighteen and Nineteen (Hours 85 - 95)

March 9, 2015

This day I arrived at the studio at 4:45 a.m. and started the early show with Speedy, Helmsey, and Greg. After more interns arrived, I worked with Adler on cameras. Mainly, I helped switch the cameras from person to person depending on who's talking. I also helped with graphics by giving the audience a picture of what the guys are talking about on the show. I learned what keys to press in order for the picture to show up through the Heartland Network and what keys worked the graphics on the bottom of the screen. For example, their Facebook and Twitter accounts and their website.

March 11, 2015
I didn't do much this day. I arrived later than normal. I didn't get the chance to work the early show like I normally do, but I still made it through the normal six to ten show. I worked the cameras, phones, and the recordings.

Days Sixteen and Seventeen ( Hours 75 - 85)

March 2, 2015

This day was Dr. Seuss Day at the studio so, of course, Bubba brought out the Dr. Seuss hat. I arrived at 4:45 am for the early show. During the 8 o'clock hour, we had a local kindergarten class come to the studio so Rick could read the Green Eggs and Ham book live on the radio. The students were able to sit in the audience. During this time, I helped Adler work the cameras and the graphics for the Heartland Network.

March 4, 2015

I arrived at the studio at 4:45 am for the early show and was able to spend some time talking on air about my Garmin Connect watch and Helmey's Fitbit. I was able to share a little bit of my experience with my watch and how it motivates me to keep moving daily.
I also recorded and helped Adler with graphics and cameras.

Day Fifteen (Hours 70 - 75)

February 23, 2014

This day was  pretty awesome! I arrived at 4:45 am and helped work the early show. I recorded the show and phone screened. I also helped Speedy get stories together for the day. We had a guest caller at the 8 o'clock hour. Our guest caller was Donnie Osmond. He called to talk about his new greatest hits album. He also mentioned working with Michael Jackson when he was younger.
During his hour, I worked behind the scenes to help Adler prepare pictures to display of Donnie Osmond for the televised audience to see.

Days Thirteen and Fourteen (Hours 60 - 70)

Monday February 16, 2015
This day was quite memorable because I messed up while I was helping produce the show. I put someone on the show that I knew wasn't going to be an asset to the show. But I've learned from my mistake. I also helped Adler with the television production behind the scenes.

Wednesday February 18, 2015
This day started out as a normal day, where I began as a recorder for the show. I helped produce at the top of the second hour where we had a special guest call in....Rand Paul. The guys asked him some very important political questions and very importantly if he is going to run for President in 2016.
We also had guest stars at the top of the last hour, Bethany and Andy Phillips. Bethany is a Country-gospel singer and Andy is a former professional baseball player. They came to the show to tell their testimonies and promote Bethany's new album.

Friday, February 13, 2015

Days Eleven and Twelve (Hours 50 - 60)

Day Eleven - February 9, 2015

This day I arrived at the studio at 4:45 a.m. and started the early show with Speedy, Helmsey, and Greg. After more interns arrived, I worked with Adler on cameras. Mainly, I helped switch the cameras from person to person depending on who's talking. I also helped with graphics by giving the audience a picture of what the guys are talking about on the show. I learned what keys to press in order for the picture to show up through the Heartland Network and what keys worked the graphics on the bottom of the screen. For example, their Facebook and Twitter accounts and their website.

Day Twelve - February 11, 2015

The first time since I've been interning at the Rick and Bubba Show...I was late because apparently I kept hitting snooze on my phone and didn't realize it until ten minutes before I had to leave. Franticly throwing on clothes and fixing my hair, I remembered what one of the past interns to me...never be late. Speeding and putting on make-up is definitely dangerous at 4:30 in the morning. I arrived ten minutes late, but realized that no one really noticed because we were having technical difficulties for the early show. That made it a little better. While the show wasn't on air, I realized how important the early show is to listeners. I had many calls asking about the guys and making sure they were okay, which I thought was awesome. It just proves how important a radio newscast is when you have listeners who work that early in the morning. Once the show was up and running, I worked with Adler more on graphics for the live television show. This is for people who watch the show through Ustream, or the iHeart radio app.

Days Nine and Ten (hours 40 - 50)

Day Nine - February 2, 2015

Day nine was a normal day at the office except it was the morning after the Super Bowl which was a huge topic for the show. The topic was popular for The Rick and Bubba audience. For me, I rotated with the other interns on the phones, recording the show, and operating the cameras. I also got to learn more about what Adler does for the show. He is the television producer. I watched how he puts video together for the website and social media accounts.

Day Ten - February 4, 2015

I started the day out in the call room taking calls for the early show and the Rick and Bubba Show. I also recorded and operated cameras for the show. This day was probably a more boring day, but everything went smoothly as far as all that I had to do.

Days Seven and Eight (Hours 30 - 40)

Day Seven

On January 26, 2015, I became an editor at The Rick and Bubba Show....
First, the day was normal. I arrived at 4:45 (like always). I helped set up for the show. I was a phone screener for the early show and for most of the 6-10 a.m. later show. Helmsey is the IT computer/website coordinator. Everything that is on the website is from the wonderful mind of the one and only Helmsey. The interns were asked to help edit a piece for the newsletter written by Rick Burgess. So, I helped edit and publish an article by Rick Burgess and his stance on Same-Sex Marriage in relation to the Constitution and our Founding Fathers.

For more information please visit  http://www.rickandbubba.com/

Day Eight

On January 28, 2015, I was able to appear on the early show AND be an editor for The Rick and Bubba Show.
The start of the day was normal. I arrived at 4:45 a.m. and went through the procedures of helping get everything ready for the show. I recorded, phone screened, and helped Speedy throughout the morning. Speedy wanted a female to chime in on the subject of "men dressing in the same clothes".  I helped Helmsey edit the final product for the website by reading everything at least five times. Check out the Final Product on the website given above and check me out as the new spotlight intern by signing up for the newsletter. Just simply enter your email address.
And I cannot forget that I got the chance to call in James Spann so he could give his opinions on the misinterpretations of the snow in the Northeast.

Day Five and Six (Hours 20 - 30)

I woke up at the normal (but not really normal) hours between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. and intended for my days at work to be like a normal day, but days five and six brought new information and a "caught off guard" on-air interview for myself.

Day Five

This day, January 19, I was able to stay until the very end of the show because we were out of school for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I normally have to leave a little early in order to get back to Tuscaloosa for class. I did the normal recording, phone-screening, and switching cameras during the 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. show. At the end of the show, I learned how to record and edit commercials. After Rick and Bubba record the commercials for during/after the show, I edited out the long spaces, mess-ups, and other sounds not included in the commercial script. I then sent the finished product to advertisers for them to listen/edit as well.

Day Six

This day, January 21, was a normal recording, phone-screening, and switching cameras kind of day until I was pulled off the recorder and Bubba put me on air over the topic of "Economics in the school systems". It was a great segment and I was glad to be apart of it because my minor is in political science, so it did not bother me to talk about it. I experienced a little more of being on-air and I liked it, but I still love working behind the scenes to help get the show ready.

Day Three and Day Four (Hours 10 - 20)

My second week of interning at The Rick and Bubba Show was a little different than the first week because this week I (or any other intern) did not have older interns at the station to help us out.
Doing things by myself was a little nerve racking, but I have already learned so much from it.

On Monday January 12, I arrived at the station at 4:45 a.m. and began my normal duties of the early shift. This shift requires a lot of running back and forth for the guys just to get the Rick and Bubba segment ready after the kick-off hour that starts at 5 a.m.
The Rick and Bubba segment was a normal 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. show.

On Wednesday January 14, I arrived at 4:45 again and this time I had a little help from a new intern who does not have a nick name yet. But I like getting things started and finished on my own because I have always been that type of person.
I kept a close eye on Speedy this day because at this point in my life, I need to decide a career path for myself. Speedy is the producer of the show, so I kept a close eye on him.
It was a normal, busy day. I kept the records of the show, and helped produce the show by taking the best callers with the best comments.

I am still trying to get used to going to sleep at 8 p.m. and waking up at 3 a.m., but I haven't had a day where I was not excited and anxious to be there.

Day 2 - Hey, hey....you know just " Joggin' and Bloggin' " (Hours 5 - 10)

Guess what time I had to wake up this morning? Three a.m.
Guess what time I had to be at the office? 4:45.

This sounds crazy and when I first started this internship, I was thinking it was crazy. But it also made me realize that I get up and intern with some of the most fun people ever. So...waking up at three isn't bad at all. In fact, I've learned to go to bed at eight and you will not look or feel like a complete zombie the next day.

As I arrived at 4:45 this morning, I helped get the studio ready and prepare for the early show. Specifically, I run the stories to Speedy, I set up the computer, I make the coffee, and today I learned what button starts the show.

Greg said, "Move this knob to turn down the commercials and then press this "ON" button at 04:59:40 to start the show. Now, don't mess this up because this shoots signals to people in New York City warning them that we are starting the show. I've had passed interns who completely screwed this up."
(A little nervous, but it's just a button. How hard is that?)

I'm turning down the commercial knob.....and 59:40 comes and I press the button....turns out, it was the wrong "ON" button. So, he laughed at me and I'll officially be the intern that pressed the wrong "ON" button. But hey, we live and we learn.

As the later show arrived at six, I recorded and answered phones.
Around eight, I was able to go on the show and get my nickname. I am now " Joggin' and Bloggin' "

It was an exciting, fun day to be a Rick and Bubba Intern.

Day 1 - Learning the Ropes (Hours 1 - 5)

Walking into The Rick and Bubba studio, I'll admit I had no idea what to expect. After listening to them my whole life on the radio, going in I felt like I knew them. I realized quickly there is more to them then just what you hear on the radio. From the first day I found out that Bubba likes to eat everything, Rick loves to sing out loud, Adler's dog is very important to him, Greg has the best jokes, Speedy's bald head shines really bright in the studio, and Helmsey seems really put together.

I have been trained to answer the phones when people want to call in, win prizes, and just simply tell the guys something. I am helping produce the show by choosing the callers who have the best comments on the topic.

I'm learning quickly how important it is to pick the best callers for the show. Rick says it's important to choose someone who has opposing views because it's boring when someone calls in to agree with them.

Adler is teaching me to switch cameras, be quick on choosing who to put in the shot, and how graphics work.

I also keep up with the recording segments and what the topic was the guys were talking about.
